Experience Poised to Enhance Performance

Our name, Group23, was chosen to reflect our intrinsic philosophy about collaborative care. It comes from the 23 pairs of chromosomes that make up most human beings—the building blocks of human physiology that join together to forge something greater than the sum of its parts. Likewise, our practice is made up of an impressive group of professionals that form a remarkable combination—one that is able to provide a prized level of collaborative care. We are a group of compassionate people and are always open to exploring the best treatment options.

Our sport physicians work to find non-surgical options of treatment. They have a wealth of experience working with professional and elite athletes and utilize this level of expertise when treating all of their patients.

Dr. Bobby Homayoon

Sport Physician
MD, MHSc, CCFP, Dip. Sport Med.

My professional experience working in the field of Sports Medicine is multifaceted and includes working with the national Canadian teams for both Judo and Diving, as well as working on a smaller scale with local amateur sports teams. Prior to my formal medical education, I also worked as a trainer at the collegiate level with the UBC Thunderbirds where I gained invaluable experience and formed my foundation for the area of Sports Medicine.

Academically, aside from my medical training, I have completed an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and a graduate degree in Public Health, both from the University of British Columbia (UBC). Upon completion of my medical degree at UBC, I went on to split my postgraduate training between the University of Calgary and the University of Ottawa. Practicing at multiple institutions across the country has allowed me to draw upon different patterns of practice and has, I believe, made me more diverse and adaptable as a physician.

Sport and competition have always been central to my life. I’ve tried my hand at many athletic pursuits in both the individual and team realm. I have competed at an international level in Taekwondo and hold a black belt in this sport. I have also competed at a provincial level in basketball and continue to play for leisure. More recently I’ve re-focused my training to compete in a triathlon next year.

My personal experience suffering with a prolonged concussion helped to develop my passion for Sports Medicine and continues to drive my career today. The challenges I faced during my recovery ultimately led to my retirement from competitive sport. Therefore, I am extremely passionate about helping young athletes to recover both quickly and effectively, so they are able to further pursue their athletic aspirations. My ultimate goal with every athlete I treat is to provide the best care, expertise, and support possible in order to facilitate a return to full athletic potential.

She is the team doctor for the Calgary Inferno women’s hockey team and works with Hockey Canada’s elite women’s hockey program.

She is interested in seeing people of all ages who are interested in becoming more active, as well as those who are active and have either an acute or a chronic injury that is affecting their function. Similarly, she is interested in how pregnant women respond to the musculoskeletal changes in their bodies during and after pregnancy, and helping them to recover their pre-pregnancy fitness, or better.

The stories of her patients’ lives continue to inspire her. Every person’s experience is different, every person’s challenges are unique. Finding personalized approaches to these challenges keeps her job fresh and interesting.

Group23 Sports Medicine is a collegial group of like-minded clinicians who create a supportive and progressive working environment and provide patients with the latest in musculoskeletal care. She is excited about the possibilities we have at Group23 to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Calgarians. She is also a resource of other therapists in the Calgary area and enjoys teaching. She has worked closely with many Calgary hand surgeons over the years and networks with other health professionals when necessary to provide the best care possible for each client.
