What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a rehabilitation treatment provided by a registered physiotherapist focused on restoring movement, function, and overall well-being through physical methods like exercise, manual therapy, and education. In Canada, physiotherapists are standardized and regulated nationally. Alberta College professionally regulates us provincially in keeping with the Health Professions Act.

Physiotherapists may have postgraduate training in one or more areas, such as FCAMPT, sports diploma, certified hand therapist, or vestibular therapist. Our specialists at Group23 are trained and certified in various areas of physiotherapy and treat a diverse range of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.

What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

Please fill out your intake questionnaire before your first appointment. Kindly use this link to confirm the location of our clinic.

Winsport is a large facility, and you may need a bit of extra time to park and check in before your appointment.

Our Physiotherapy assessments are one hour.  Your therapist takes this time to learn about your injury history, your expectations and your goals for recovery. Consider bringing a change of clothes: stretchy pants for a back injury, shorts for a knee or ankle injury and short sleeve shirt or tank top for arm injuries. Please bring a copy of your physio referral if you were referred from outside our clinic. Bringing copies of your imaging reports may save your therapist time, but most of our clinicians can access Netcare if necessary.

Your therapist will take a history and then perform a physical assessment, with the goal of making a treatment plan specific to your suspected diagnosis. We feel that time spent on education about your injury and teaching a home program is the most important first step, but if time allows you may receive some treatment at your first session (manual techniques and / or appropriate modalities).  At the conclusion of your session, you and your therapist should discuss how often you might need to return to the clinic for treatment and progression of your home program.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is administered using a machine that delivers a high-energy acoustic waves to an injured area. It is a non-invasive treatment that can alleviate pain and stimulate the body’s natural healing process. The exact mechanism of Shockwave therapy is not well understood; however, the current research indicates that it increases blood flow, which impacts chronic inflammation, encourages the formation of new blood vessels, and can have a positive influence on pain.
