What is AASIC?

AASIC was established at Group23 to provide the public with quicker and more direct access to sports medicine physicians for assessment and management of acute sports or activity-related injuries sustained within the past three months.

The name Accelerated Access Sports Injury Clinic (AASIC) applies to our self-referral program, designed to help patients access care without delays caused by appointments with other practitioners or long waits in the emergency room for the sole purpose of a referral to our services.

Who is Eligible For the AASIC Clinic

Have you experienced the following from your injury in the last 3 months...

Reduced range of motion
Pain with movement
Swelling
Bruising or discolouration
Unstable joints
Locking, clicking or stiff joints
Inability to bear weight
Heard or felt a pop or tear

If you are eligible for AASIC...

Fill Out the Form

Start by filling out our eligibility form. You will then be scheduled for an in-person appointment, during which a Physiotherapist and a Sports Medicine Physician will assess your injury and coordinate your care that is unique to you.

Prepare For the Appointment

Before you come to your appointment, please wear clothing that will allow for an accurate assessment of the injured area. For example, you will want to bring shorts for any lower body injuries. There is also a questionnaire that needs to be completed before the first appointment.

During Your Appointment

Bring your personal healthcare card to your appointment. You can expect the appointment to last 60-90 minutes. For all out of province patients there is a $50 cost associated with the appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?

No. You can access AASIC without a formal referral from your family doctor.

Will my family doctor receive a report from AASIC?

Group23 Sports Medicine Physicians will always send the visit consultation report to your family doctor at your request to ensure they are kept in the loop.

Is there a cost to the appointment?

No. The appointment with a sports medicine physician is covered by Alberta Health Services as well as any imaging that they order, so there are no direct costs to Albertan patients. Please note there is a $50 charge for out-of-province patients and will be charged a no show fee if you are outside the 24-hour cancellation period.

A sports medicine physician may prescribe medication or bracing products or refer a patient to physiotherapy services as part of the treatment plan. Note that none of these are directly covered by Alberta Health Care but may be covered by extended health benefit plans.

Is an X-ray available, if needed?

We have x-rays available on-site. EFW Radiology’s hours within Group23 are 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
